Defined as a painful degenerative joint disease due to pathologic overload (exceeds joint adaptive capacity) or systemic disease leading to the deterioration of articular surfaces (soft & hard tissues). The presence of sustained inflammatory mediators around the synovium leads to degeneration of structures involved.
Osteoarthritis may be the cause of the pain in the area of temporomandibular joints, but its course may also be absolutely asymptomatic. (Derwich et al, 2020)
Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is a degenerative disease, which, in addition to chronic pain, is characterized by progressive cartilage breakdown, condylar bone remodeling, and synovitis. (Lee et al, 2020)
