Serotonin syndrome is caused by elevated serotonin levels in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The classic presentation is the triad of autonomic dysfunction, neuromuscular excitation, and altered mental status.

The drugs and supplements that could potentially cause serotonin syndrome include Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), antidepressants such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine, paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva, Brisdelle), and sertraline (Zoloft). A combination of 2 MAOIs or an MAOI and another serotonergic drug carries the greatest risk of serotonin toxicity.
